Why won’t my pool stay clear ?

If your pool keeps turning cloudy or never seems to stay clear, there's usually an underlying problem preventing your filtration system or water chemistry from doing its job. The good news is that, in most cases, the cause can be narrowed down to a few common issues.

1. Your water chemistry is unbalanced

Poor water chemistry is one of the biggest reasons a pool won't stay clear. Low chlorine, high or low pH, incorrect stabiliser, or unbalanced calcium hardness can all reduce water quality and allow algae or cloudy water to develop.

2. Your filter needs cleaning

Your filter continuously removes dirt and fine particles from the water. If it becomes clogged, water flow is reduced and the filter can no longer clean the pool effectively. A simple backwash or cartridge clean is often enough to restore good filtration.

3. Your pump isn't running long enough

Your pool water needs to be filtered every day. If the pump isn't running for long enough, dirt and contaminants remain in the water, making it difficult for the pool to stay clear.

4. Your pool is under heavy demand

Hot weather, frequent swimming, heavy rain, strong winds and falling leaves all increase the amount of work your pool has to do. During these periods, you may need to increase your filtration time and chlorinator output.

5. There could be an equipment problem

Sometimes the issue isn't the water at all. A dirty chlorinator cell, a failing pump, a blocked impeller, a damaged filter or a faulty chlorinator can all prevent your pool from staying clean.

Alex’s Advice💡

If your pool won't stay clear, start by checking:

  • Your chlorine and pH levels.

  • Your pump running time.

  • Your filter pressure and cleanliness.

  • Your pump and skimmer baskets.

  • That your equipment is operating correctly.

In many cases, fixing one of these issues is enough to restore clear water.
