Why is my pool losing water ?

Some water loss from your pool is completely normal. Evaporation is something all pool owners experience in Queensland, especially during hot, sunny and windy weather.

How can I reduce evaporation?

There are a few simple ways to reduce water loss:

  • Reduce splashing: Water that is constantly being thrown out of the pool evaporates much faster. This is especially common with children playing, busy pool areas, or frequent use.

  • Limit water features: Fountains, waterfalls and deck jets create extra water movement and increase evaporation.

  • Add shade: A shade cover, shade sail or other protection from direct sunlight can help reduce evaporation.

  • Use a pool blanket: This is the most effective way to reduce evaporation. A pool blanket acts as a barrier between the water and the air, helping retain water, heat and chemicals.

Alex’s Advice💡

Don't assume that all water loss is caused by evaporation. Sometimes a leak can be responsible, especially if your water level is dropping quickly or you need to constantly refill your pool.

A simple way to check is with a bucket test:

  1. Fill a bucket with pool water.

  2. Place it on the top step of your pool (or another stable area) with some weight inside so it doesn't move.

  3. Match the water level inside the bucket and the water level outside the bucket.

  4. Leave it for around a week.

  5. Compare the two levels.

If the pool water level has dropped more than the water inside the bucket, your pool is likely losing water due to a leak rather than evaporation.

A leak can come from many places, including plumbing, fittings, equipment or the pool structure, and usually requires a professional leak detection service to locate the source.
