How can I reduce the pool’s water evaporation ?
Water evaporation is a normal part of owning a swimming pool, especially on the Sunshine Coast where warm temperatures, strong sun and coastal winds can cause water levels to drop surprisingly quickly.
Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce evaporation and save both water and chemicals.
Use a pool blanket
The most effective way to reduce evaporation is by using a pool blanket. A quality blanket can reduce water loss by up to 95%, while also helping to retain heat and protect your chlorine from the sun.
Reduce water movement
Features such as waterfalls, deck jets and fountains create extra water movement, which increases evaporation. If you're not using these features, consider turning them off.
Protect your pool from the wind
Wind is one of the biggest causes of evaporation. If your pool is exposed, installing a fence, hedge or windbreak can significantly reduce water loss.
Keep your water level correct
Maintain the water level around halfway up the skimmer opening. If the level drops too low, your pump may begin drawing air, reducing circulation and potentially damaging the pump.
Alex’s Advice💡
It's normal to lose a small amount of water through evaporation, but if you're constantly topping up your pool, you may have a leak. A leaking pipe, fitting or piece of equipment can waste a surprising amount of water.
If you're unsure whether your pool is simply evaporating water or may have a leak, feel free to book a service. I'll inspect your pool and equipment and help determine whether the water loss is normal or needs further investigation.
