How do I prepare my swimming pool for the cooler months ?

As the weather cools down, your pool becomes much easier to maintain. Water temperatures drop, chlorine lasts longer, and algae grow much more slowly. However, this doesn't mean you can stop looking after your pool altogether.

Here are a few simple steps to prepare your pool for the cooler months:

Check your water chemistry

Before winter arrives, test your pool water and make sure your chlorine, pH, buffer, calcium hardness, stabiliser and salt levels are all within the recommended range. Balanced water will help keep your pool healthy throughout the season.

Reduce your pump running time

During winter, your pool doesn't need to be filtered as much as it does in summer. As a general guide, aim to circulate the entire volume of your pool 1 to 1.5 times per day, which usually means running your pump for 4 to 6 hours a day, depending on your pump's flow rate.

Decrease your chlorinator output

Because chlorine is consumed much more slowly during cooler weather, you'll usually need to reduce your chlorinator output. This will help maintain the correct chlorine level while avoiding unnecessary chlorine production.

Use a pool blanket if you have one

A pool blanket helps keep leaves, dust and other debris out of the water. It also reduces water evaporation and helps preserve your chlorine by protecting it from sunlight.

Consider adding a winter algaecide

Some pool owners choose to add a winter algaecide as an extra layer of protection. While it's not essential for every pool, it can help reduce the risk of algae growth during periods when the pool isn't used very often.

Alex’s Advice💡

A common mistake is assuming that pools don't need attention during winter. While algae grow more slowly, they can still bloom if your chlorine level drops too low or your equipment stops working.

I recommend checking your pool at least once every fortnight. Make sure the pump is running, the filter pressure is normal, and the water is still clear. Catching a problem early is much easier than recovering a green pool later.

If you'd rather not worry about your pool during winter, feel free to book a regular service. I'll keep your water balanced, inspect your equipment, and make sure your pool is ready for the warmer months ahead.
