Pool pumps are built to last, but like any piece of equipment, they can develop faults over time. Unusual noises are often one of the first signs that something isn't quite right.

Here are three of the most common causes:

1. A humming sound and the pump is slow to start

If your pump makes a humming or buzzing noise before it starts, or struggles to get up to speed, the capacitor may be failing. The capacitor gives the motor the extra boost it needs to start, and replacing it is often a straightforward repair.

2. A scratching or grinding noise

A mechanical scratching, grinding or rumbling sound usually indicates that the motor bearings are worn. Worn bearings should be replaced as soon as possible, as continuing to run the pump can cause further damage to the motor.

3. The pump sounds like it's running dry

If the pump is running but sounds like it hasn't fully "caught" or is making a growling or gurgling noise, it may have lost its prime. This means there isn't enough water inside the pump for it to circulate properly.

Start by checking the pump basket through the clear lid. It should be completely full of water while the pump is running. If it isn't:

1. Switch the pump off.

2. Open the pump lid.

3. Fill the pump basket with water (around one or two buckets is usually enough).

4. Refit the lid securely and restart the pump.

If the pump repeatedly loses its prime, there may be an air leak on the suction side of the system, a blocked skimmer basket, or the pool water level may be too low.
