How long should my pool pump run ?
The ideal running time for your pool pump depends on several factors, including your pool's volume, your pump's flow rate, the time of year, and how heavily the pool is used.
As a general rule, your pump should circulate the entire volume of your pool:
1 to 1.5 times per day during winter
2 to 2.5 times per day during summer
The purpose of your filtration system is to continuously remove dirt, dust, leaves, insects and other fine particles from the water while distributing chlorine evenly throughout the pool. As water temperatures rise, algae and bacteria reproduce much faster, which is why longer filtration times are recommended during the warmer months.
How do I calculate my pump running time?
To calculate the ideal running time, you'll need two pieces of information:
Your pool's volume (in litres or cubic metres).
Your pump's flow rate (available in the manufacturer's specifications, usually in litres per minute or cubic metres per hour).
The formula is:
Pump running time = Pool volume ÷ Pump flow rate × Number of daily turnovers
Where:
Use 1 to 1.5 turnovers during winter.
Use 2 to 2.5 turnovers during summer.
For example, if your pool holds 50,000 litres and your pump delivers 12,500 litres per hour, running the system for approximately 4 hours will achieve one turnover. During summer, you may increase this to around 8 hours to achieve two turnovers.

If your pump has been correctly sized for your pool, the following running times are a good starting point:
Winter: 4–6 hours per day
Summer: 8–10 hours per day
These times may need to be adjusted depending on weather conditions, pool usage, surrounding trees, or if your pool experiences frequent algae problems.
Running your pump longer than necessary won't usually harm your pool, but it will increase your electricity costs and add unnecessary wear to your equipment. On the other hand, not running it long enough can lead to poor water circulation, reduced chlorine distribution, cloudy water, and an increased risk of algae growth.
