What should my chlorine level be ?

Whether you have a saltwater pool, a chemical feeder, or manually add chlorine, it is generally recommended to maintain a free chlorine level between 1 and 5 mg/L (ppm). This range helps keep your pool safe to swim in while preventing algae and harmful bacteria from growing.

However, there isn't a single chlorine level that suits every pool. The amount of chlorine your pool needs depends on several factors, including the weather, how often the pool is used, and the surrounding environment.

For example, a pool that:

  • Is mostly shaded

  • Has very few swimmers

  • Receives little dust, leaves or other debris

...will generally use much less chlorine because there are fewer contaminants for the chlorine to destroy.

On the other hand, a pool that:

  • Sits in direct sunlight for most of the day

  • Is used frequently by family and guests

  • Collects leaves, dirt, pollen and other debris

...will consume chlorine much faster. In these conditions, your chlorinator or chlorine dosing may need to be increased to maintain safe sanitiser levels.

It's important to remember that chlorine is constantly being consumed as it destroys bacteria, algae and organic contaminants. If chlorine production cannot keep up with demand, the chlorine level will eventually fall too low, allowing algae to bloom and potentially making the pool unsafe to swim in.

A Note for Freshwater Pool Owners (Copper Ionisers)

If your pool uses a freshwater system or copper ioniser, your chlorine requirements are different from those of a traditional chlorine or saltwater pool.

Copper ionisers use electrolysis to release microscopic copper and silver ions into the water. Copper is highly effective at controlling algae, while silver helps inhibit the growth of bacteria.

However, chlorine is still essential. Copper and silver ions are not oxidisers, meaning they cannot break down organic contaminants such as sweat, body oils, sunscreen, leaves, or other debris. A small amount of chlorine is still required to oxidise these contaminants and keep the water clean and safe.

With a properly functioning ioniser and balanced water chemistry, most freshwater pools can maintain a free chlorine level of around 0.2–0.5 ppm (mg/L). This is significantly lower than the chlorine level recommended for conventional pools while still providing effective sanitation.

I recommend having your pool water professionally tested at least every two weeks at your local pool shop. As the seasons change and weather conditions vary, your pool's chlorine demand also changes. Regular testing helps ensure your water remains clean, balanced, and safe to swim in.

Maintaining the correct chlorine level is important:

  • If the chlorine level is too low, your pool won't be properly sanitised, allowing algae and bacteria to grow.

  • If the chlorine level is too high, it can cause skin and eye irritation, accelerate the wear of pool equipment and surfaces, and make it more difficult to maintain balanced water chemistry.

If your chlorinator has a super chlorinate or hyperchlorination function, it's worth using it after periods of heavy pool use, such as when you've had friends or family swimming all day. This feature temporarily increases the chlorinator output to 100% for around 24 hours, helping to oxidise the extra contaminants introduced by swimmers without requiring you to manually adjust your normal settings.

Remember that this feature is designed for occasional use and does not replace regular water testing or proper chlorine level adjustments.
