How Do I Know If My Pool Has Algae?
Not every green or discoloured pool is necessarily suffering from the same problem.
A pool may have a slight green tint while the water remains relatively clear, or it can develop into a severe algae bloom where the water becomes dark green and the bottom of the pool is no longer visible.
Algae can also appear as green deposits on the walls, floor, steps and other surfaces.
However, green or unusual-looking water can sometimes have other causes. Metals such as copper or iron can affect water colour, while high calcium levels, poor filtration and other water chemistry problems can cause cloudiness.
This is why properly assessing the pool before treatment is important. Treating the wrong problem can waste chemicals, time and money.
How Does a Green Pool Recovery Work?
Every green pool is different, so the recovery process depends on the condition of the water, the equipment and the severity of the algae.
1. Pool and equipment assessment
The first step is to assess the pool and its equipment. I look at the condition of the water and check whether the pump, filter and sanitising system are operating correctly.
If there is an equipment problem contributing to the green water, simply treating the algae may only provide a temporary solution.
2. Water testing
The water needs to be tested before deciding what treatment is required.
Depending on the pool and sanitising system, this can include checking sanitiser, pH, alkalinity, stabiliser, calcium hardness, salt or mineral levels and other relevant parameters.
Testing allows me to understand what is happening in the water rather than simply adding chemicals without knowing what is required.
3. Correcting the water balance
Before and during treatment, the water may need to be adjusted to create the right conditions for the sanitising process.
Maintaining appropriate water balance is important not only for killing algae but also for protecting the pool surface and equipment.
4. Treating the algae
The treatment required depends on the severity of the algae bloom and the type of pool sanitising system.
The objective is to eliminate the active algae and prevent it from continuing to grow.
A lightly affected pool may recover relatively quickly, while a severely neglected pool can require significantly more treatment and filtration time.
5. Brushing the pool
Brushing the walls, floor, steps and other surfaces can help remove algae that has attached itself to the pool.
This allows the treatment to reach more of the affected surfaces and helps loosen material that can later be removed through filtration or vacuuming.
6. Filtration and circulation
Killing the algae is only part of the recovery process.
Once algae has been treated, a significant amount of dead organic material can remain suspended in the water. The filtration system needs to remove this material to bring the pool back to a clear condition.
Depending on the type and condition of the filter, cleaning or backwashing may be required during the recovery process.
The pump also needs to operate for an appropriate amount of time to keep the water circulating and allow the filter to do its job.
7. Re-testing the water
A pool isn't necessarily recovered simply because the water starts looking better.
The water should be tested again to ensure that the chemistry is moving in the right direction and that the sanitising system is able to maintain the pool once the recovery is complete.
If necessary, further adjustments or treatment may be required.
8. Final clean-up
Once the water has cleared, the pool may need additional cleaning, vacuuming, equipment checks or filter maintenance.
The final goal is not just to make the pool look clear, but to leave the water in a condition where it can be maintained properly going forward.
How Long Does Green Pool Recovery Take?
There is no single recovery time that applies to every green pool.
A pool that is only slightly green, with the bottom still clearly visible, may improve significantly within 24 to 48 hours. A moderately affected pool may take several days, while a severe algae bloom can take a week or longer to fully recover.
The recovery time can depend on:
How severe the algae growth is
How long the pool has been green
Water temperature
Water chemistry
Pump performance
Filter type and condition
Amount of debris in the pool
Circulation
Condition of the sanitising equipment
I prefer to be realistic about recovery times rather than promise that every green pool will be fixed in a single visit.
